SURROUNDINGS
Montorfano is a small town in the province of Como. It takes about 15 minutes by car to reach the center of Como. If you prefer to stay in Montorfano, you’ll still find nearby shops, bars, and restaurants, and you can walk to the public beach (lido) in about 15 minutes, where you’ll find a beach bar and a restaurant.
GETTING AROUND
For convenience, we recommend guests arrive by car. Traveling to and from Montorfano is also manageable by public transport. Several bus lines connect to nearby towns like Como and other lakeside locations. Tickets can be purchased from the driver (cash only) or at designated sales points. Please note that buses do not run very frequently and the service typically ends around 10:00 PM! Taxis are available but not easy to find in the area.
From Como, it is easy to reach Milan and Switzerland (Lugano, Bellinzona, Locarno) by train. Public ferries also depart from Como’s central dock to other lakeside towns. The closest airports are Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, and Orio al Serio in Bergamo. A direct airport shuttle service can be arranged at an additional cost.
If you have any questions regarding transportation, feel free to contact us—we’ll be happy to help and ensure you reach your desired destination!
TIPS
If you enjoy walking, Como city center is reachable on foot with a scenic walk of about an hour. Take the main road to Villa Olmo, then follow the pedestrian path along the lake.
To explore and walk around Lake Como, especially in the small towns, comfortable shoes are a must.
In the towns, you’ll find many public fountains, and the water is drinkable unless otherwise indicated. Tap water is also safe to drink, so feel free to bring your reusable water bottle!
From Montorfano, there are many hiking opportunities through nearby woods and into the surrounding mountains.
If you’re looking for an easy hike with great mountain views, the Greenway del Lago di Como is a scenic and gentle path that doesn't require much climbing. It runs through towns from Colonno to Griante. You can reach the starting point in Colonno by bus from Montorfano. Another lovely and relaxing hiking path in the area is the Via Verde, connecting Moltrasio to Laglio.
In Italy, many shops (especially smaller ones) and services close during midday hours, so be sure to plan your shopping accordingly.
Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the deepest in Italy. Swimming and diving are prohibited in many areas and can be dangerous. However, for those wishing to enjoy the water, there are a few options. In Montorfano, the lake lido has a swimming pool. There’s also a small beach in nearby Moltrasio. In Como city, there’s an outdoor pool near Villa Olmo, but lake swimming is mostly discouraged or prohibited. Locals and visitors also love visiting Nesso, where the more adventurous can dive into the lake from the old Roman bridge near the waterfall.
Lake Como is in a mountainous region. The surrounding pre-Alps may not seem very high, but the nearby mountains influence the climate, and temperatures can change quickly. Be especially mindful of the weather during hikes and always bring warm, waterproof clothing.
