SURROUNDINGS
The apartment is located in Torno, one of the most picturesque spots on the shores of Lake Como.
Torno is on the right bank of Lake Como, along the road connecting Como and Bellagio. Although small, Torno remains one of the most sought-after destinations on Lake Como and one of the most visited towns on the western branch of the lake. Tourists and holidaymakers are attracted by the narrow typical streets and the fascinating villas – Villa Pliniana dating back to the 16th century, Villa Taverna with its magnificent gardens, and Villa Mia. The writer and poet Hermann Hesse was also impressed by the beauty and charm of Torno, so much so that he wrote about it in his essay "Spaziergang am Comer See" ("A Walk around Lake Como").
Nature lovers will be enchanted by the wonderful trails leading to the mountain villages of Monte Piatto and Piazzaga.
GETTING AROUND
There is a bus service connecting Como and Bellagio (line C30) and another connecting Palanzo and Como (line C31). The bus stop is near the car parking area – about a 4/5-minute walk from the apartment. Please note that bus rides are not very frequent and service does not run after 10:00 pm. Taxi services are available but not always easy to find in the area. Como is about a 15/20-minute drive away. From Como, it is very convenient to reach Milan and Switzerland (Lugano, Bellinzona, Locarno) by train.
A public ferry service is available from Como’s central pier, with routes to other towns along the lakeshore.
From Bellagio, you can reach Menaggio, Cadenabbia, and Varenna by ferry.
The nearest airports are Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, and Orio al Serio in Bergamo. A shuttle service to and from the airports can easily be arranged at an additional cost.
For further questions regarding transport and transfers, please do not hesitate to contact us – we will be happy to assist you!
TIPS
We recommend dedicating a day to visiting the beautiful towns around the lake. The city of Como is the urban center of the area, but the small towns are gems with splendid lakeside villas.
To move around and walk by Lake Como, especially in the small villages, comfortable shoes are necessary.
There are many public drinking fountains in the area, and the water is safe to drink unless otherwise indicated. Tap water is also drinkable. Bring your own refillable bottle!
Hiking lovers can walk along parts of the Strada Regia – the ancient road connecting Brunate (Como) to Bellagio.
Look for traditional restaurants where you can taste local foods, especially fish dishes from Lake Como.
In Italy, many shops (especially small ones) and services close at midday, so be mindful when planning your shopping.
Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the deepest in Italy. Swimming and diving are prohibited in many areas and can be dangerous. For those wishing to swim, however, there are some options. In Blevio – the village next to Torno – there is a small beach for swimming and wakeboarding. In Como, there is an outdoor pool near Villa Olmo, but swimming in the lake is generally not recommended and mostly forbidden. There are beaches in other lakeside locations.
The Lido of Bellagio and the pebble beach of San Giovanni await those who wish to travel and explore the beautiful town of Bellagio, located at the center of the two lake branches. Locals and visitors also enjoy going to Nesso, where the bravest swimmers can dive into the lake from the ancient Roman bridge near the waterfall.
Lake Como is in a mountainous region. The surrounding Prealps may not seem very high, but the climate is still influenced by the nearby mountains, and temperatures can change quickly. Pay special attention to weather conditions during hikes and bring warm, waterproof clothing!
